The story

The 1998 Yankees finished the regular season 114-48, setting a new American League record for wins — a mark surpassed only by the 116-win Seattle Mariners of 2001. They won the AL East by 22 games, Bernie Williams took the AL batting title at .339, and David Wells threw a perfect game at Yankee Stadium in May. Remarkably, no single hitter carried the team; it was the depth of the lineup, with Paul O’Neill, Tino Martinez and Jorge Posada all contributing, that made them relentless.

October brought one genuine scare — Cleveland led the ALCS 2-1 — but the Yankees won three straight to put it away and finished the postseason 11-2, beating Texas and Cleveland before sweeping the San Diego Padres 4-0 in the World Series, with Scott Brosius named Series MVP. Their 125 combined wins across the regular season and playoffs remain the most by any team in a single MLB season.

This roster also carried the famed Core Four — Jeter, Rivera, Posada and Andy Pettitte — and the Yankees won four World Series in five seasons between 1996 and 2000. Rivera, the closer, retired as MLB’s all-time saves leader and became the first player ever elected to the Hall of Fame unanimously.
