The story

The 1976 Reds won 102 regular-season games behind what fans called the Great Eight — a starting lineup so strong that three of its members, Bench, Morgan and Rose, rank among the most celebrated players in baseball history. Joe Morgan won his second consecutive National League MVP award that year, while George Foster led the league in RBIs and Ken Griffey Sr. chased the batting title down to the season’s final day.

Then came a postseason unlike any other. Cincinnati swept the Philadelphia Phillies 3-0 in the NLCS and the New York Yankees 4-0 in the World Series — a perfect 7-0 October, the only unbeaten run through an entire postseason since the League Championship Series was introduced in 1969.

Johnny Bench was named World Series MVP after hitting .533 against the Yankees, including two home runs in the clinching Game 4. The title made the Reds the first National League team to win back-to-back World Series since the New York Giants of 1921-22.
