Boston Red Sox 2004: The Curse-Breakers

No championship in baseball history carries more emotional weight than Boston’s in 2004. Down 3-0 to the Yankees in the ALCS — a deficit no MLB team had ever overturned — the self-styled “Idiots” won four straight, then swept the World Series to end an 86-year wait for a title.

That whole cast — David Ortiz, Curt Schilling, Manny Ramirez, Johnny Damon — is draftable in Go Unbeaten. Spin the MLB wheel, land on Boston Red Sox 2004, and build a lineup around the curse-breakers before simulating your own season.

The story

Boston had not won the World Series since 1918, a drought fans blamed on the “Curse of the Bambino” after the sale of Babe Ruth to the Yankees. When New York took a 3-0 lead in the 2004 ALCS, the story looked set to repeat — until Dave Roberts stole second base in the ninth inning of Game 4 and David Ortiz delivered walk-off hits in Games 4 and 5 on consecutive nights.

Game 6 produced one of October’s most famous images: Curt Schilling pitching seven innings on a sutured ankle tendon, blood visibly seeping through his sock. Johnny Damon then hit a grand slam in Game 7 as Boston completed the only 3-0 comeback in MLB postseason history, with Ortiz named ALCS MVP.

The World Series was almost an anticlimax. The Red Sox swept the St. Louis Cardinals 4-0 — famously never trailing at any point in the series — with Manny Ramirez taking Series MVP. Boston won its final eight postseason games, and it was closer Keith Foulke who fielded the last out himself, flipping the ball to first base to end the 86-year wait.
