The story
After the Saudi Arabia defeat, Argentina simply refused to lose again. Messi dragged them through the group, then scored in every knockout round — against Australia, the Netherlands, Croatia and twice in the final. Julián Álvarez chipped in four goals of his own, including a brace in the 3-0 semi-final win over Croatia, while Di María's runs stretched defences all tournament.
The final against France in Lusail finished 3-3 after extra time, with Di María scoring Argentina's second and Kylian Mbappé hitting a hat-trick to keep France alive. Emiliano Martínez made a miraculous last-minute save from Randal Kolo Muani in extra time, then Argentina won the shootout 4-2 to claim their third World Cup.
Messi finished with seven goals and the Golden Ball — the first player ever to win the award twice — while Martínez took the Golden Glove. For Argentina it was a first world title since Diego Maradona inspired the 1986 triumph.
