Chemistry Explained

Chemistry is the most misunderstood number in Go Unbeaten — and the one that decides more unbeaten runs than any single superstar pick. Here is exactly how it is calculated, how it feeds your win probability, and how to draft for it.

Draft a squad

How chemistry is scored

When you finish a draft, the game checks every possible pair of players in your lineup. A football XI has 55 pairs; an NBA starting five has 10. Each pair is scored once, on its strongest connection:

Full link (1.0) — the two players share a team: the same club in a league mode, or the same nation in World Cup mode.

Half link (0.5) — no shared team, but they come from the same season, era, or tournament year. Phil Foden and a 2023-24 Arsenal pick never played together, but they belong to the same footballing moment, and the game rewards that — at half value.

Your chemistry score is simply your total links as a percentage of all possible pairs. Build your entire XI from a single squad and every one of the 55 pairs is a full link: 100% chemistry. Stitch together eleven strangers from eleven different eras and you sit at 0%, no matter how famous the names are.

From chemistry to squad strength

Squad strength is your average overall rating plus chemistry multiplied by 0.12. In other words, 100% chemistry is worth up to 12 rating points — as if every player in your squad were a full tier better than their card says.

Strength then sets your per-match win probability: every strength point is worth roughly 2.5 percentage points per game, with a floor of 35% and a ceiling of 98.5%. No squad is ever guaranteed a perfect run, but the gap between 0% and 100% chemistry can swing each match by as much as 30 percentage points. Compounded across a 38-game season, that is routinely the difference between Champions (28+ wins) and Invincibles (zero defeats) on the tier ladder — Arsenal's real 2003-04 side went 26-12-0, and recreating that in the sim takes exactly this kind of edge.

A worked example

Four pairs, four different outcomes:

Patrick Vieira + Thierry Henry Full link

Both Arsenal 2003-04. A shared club is a full link — the shared season adds nothing extra on top.

Phil Foden + any Arsenal 2023-24 pick Half link

Different clubs, but both from the 2023-24 era. Shared season or era is worth half a link.

Thierry Henry + Erling Haaland No link

Arsenal 2003-04 meets Manchester City 2023-24: different club, different era. This pair scores zero.

Cafu + Ronaldo Full link

Both Brazil 2002. In World Cup mode a shared nation counts as a full link, just like a shared club.

That last pair matters if you are chasing the trophy in World Cup mode, where one knockout defeat ends the run — a cohesive national squad gives you the per-match probability you need to survive seven games.

Drafting for chemistry

The practical upshot: a slightly lower-rated player from a squad you already hold often beats a higher-rated stranger. An 83-rated Gilberto Silva who full-links with five team-mates can add more to your squad strength than a 90-rated icon who links with nobody — the rating gap is smaller than the chemistry he brings to every pair he joins.

It also means spin repeats are an opportunity, not a bug. When the wheel lands on a squad you have already drafted from, every extra pick from it links fully with the players you took earlier. Resist the urge to burn one of your 2 re-rolls just because you have seen the squad before.

Chemistry is the backbone of every serious strategy on this site. See it applied match by match in our guides to going 38-0 in the football season and going 82-0 in the NBA — where a starting five means only ten pairs, so every single link moves the number.

Chemistry questions

Do full and half links stack?

No. Each pair of players counts its strongest connection once. Two team-mates from the same season are still one full link, not one and a half — the half link only applies when players share an era but not a team.

How much is chemistry actually worth?

Squad strength is your average overall rating plus chemistry times 0.12, so 100% chemistry adds up to 12 rating points. Each strength point is worth roughly 2.5 percentage points of per-match win probability, capped at 98.5% — over a long season that is a huge swing.

Should I re-roll when the wheel repeats a squad?

Usually not. A repeated squad means every player you take from it links fully with the ones you already have. You only get 2 re-rolls per draft, so save them for spins that genuinely do not fit, not for repeats.

Does chemistry work the same in every mode?

Yes. The same pair-by-pair calculation runs in club seasons, the NBA, NFL, NHL and MLB modes, and World Cup mode — only the fields change. In World Cup mode a shared nation is the full link and a shared tournament year is the half link.

Is this the same chemistry system as 82-0.com or 38-0-0.com?

We can only speak for our own game — this guide describes exactly how Go Unbeaten calculates chemistry. Go Unbeaten is an independent fan project and is not affiliated with 82-0.com, 38-0-0.com, or any league, club, or governing body.
