Golden State Warriors 2016-17: The Superteam

When Kevin Durant joined a Golden State side that had just won 73 games, the rest of the NBA called it unfair. The 2016-17 Warriors proved the point by losing once — once — in the entire postseason, the most lopsided championship run the league has ever seen.

Go Unbeaten lets you find out what happens when that firepower plays a full season. Spin the NBA wheel until it lands on the Warriors, draft the 2016-17 five with Stephen Curry and Durant leading the way, and simulate all 82 games. The real team went 67-15; the target here is perfection.

The story

The 2016-17 Warriors stacked four All-Stars into one starting lineup: Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Kevin Durant and Draymond Green, with Zaza Pachulia holding down the centre spot. The regular season was almost a formality — 67 wins and the top seed in the West — because everyone knew this team would be judged on the playoffs alone.

They answered emphatically. Golden State opened the postseason 15-0, the first team ever to do so, sweeping their way to the Finals before meeting LeBron James and the Cavaliers for a third straight year. The Cavs took Game 4; the Warriors took everything else, closing out the series 4-1 to finish 16-1 — the best playoff record in NBA history at the time.

Durant, who averaged over 35 points per game in the Finals, was named Finals MVP in his first season in the Bay. Whatever you think of how the superteam was assembled, its peak was as close to flawless as playoff basketball has ever come.
