Arsenal 2003-04: The Invincibles

Some squads win titles. This one rewrote what a title-winning season could look like. Arsenal's 2003-04 side played all 38 Premier League matches without losing a single one — 26 wins, 12 draws, zero defeats — and walked away with a gold trophy made specially to mark it. Thierry Henry up front, Patrick Vieira driving the midfield, Dennis Bergkamp threading passes between the lines: the Invincibles are the benchmark every unbeaten run is measured against.

In Go Unbeaten, that benchmark is literally the goal. Spin the wheel in club mode and when it stops on Arsenal 2003-04, you can draft one of its players into your own side. Going unbeaten in the game works exactly the way it did for Arsenal: finish the simulated 38-match season with no defeats — draws allowed — and you join the Invincibles.

The story

Arsène Wenger had been mocked for suggesting a side could go through a season unbeaten. In 2003-04 his team did it. Arsenal opened with a win over Everton in August and never lost, clinching the title with four games to spare in a 2-2 draw at Tottenham — sealing the championship at the home of their fiercest rivals. They finished on 90 points, becoming the first English top-flight club to complete a season unbeaten since Preston North End's 22-game 'Invincibles' campaign of 1888-89.

Thierry Henry was the season's defining player, scoring 30 league goals to win the European Golden Shoe and sweeping the PFA Player of the Year and FWA Footballer of the Year awards. Behind him, Robert Pires and Freddie Ljungberg supplied goals from wide, Vieira and Gilberto Silva controlled the middle, and a back line marshalled by Sol Campbell conceded just 26 league goals all season.

The unbeaten run did not stop at 38. Arsenal carried it into the following season and stretched it to 49 consecutive league matches — an English top-flight record — before it finally ended at Old Trafford in October 2004. No Premier League club has gone a full season unbeaten since.

  • Final 2003-04 league record: played 38, won 26, drew 12, lost 0 — 90 points.

  • Thierry Henry scored 30 league goals and won the European Golden Shoe.
  • The unbeaten run eventually stretched to a record 49 league matches.
  • Arsenal were presented with a unique gold version of the Premier League trophy.
